As a Network Administrator/Engineer you may be asked to find MAC addresses and/or IP Addresses, hopefully this can make your job a little bit easier. These commands work on most Cisco Switches and Routers but sometimes the commands can vary from device to device.

We can find mac address (physical address) of a computer using the command ‘ getmac ‘. This can be used to get mac address for remote computers also. Below are few examples on how to use this command. It works on XP, Vista, Windows 7, Server 2003 and Server 2008 operating systems. MAC Address or media access control address is a unique ID assigned to network interface cards (NICs). It is also known as a physical or hardware address. It identifies the hardware manufacturer and is used for network communication between devices in a network segment. MAC Address usually consists of six groups of two hexadecimal digits. Use this method to obtain the MAC Address of your local computer as well as query remotely by computer name or IP Address. Hold down the “Windows Key” and press “R“. Type “CMD“, then press “Enter“. You can use one of the following commands: GETMAC /s computername – Get MAC Address remotely by Computer Name. The easiest way to find your MAC address on Linux is to execute the “ifconfig” command with the “-a” option for “all”. The MAC address is available in the “ ether ” section, concatening your OUI vendor and your OUI specific address. For this network interface, you. 5 Steps total

Step 1: Connect to your Cisco Devices

Connect to the Switch/Router by using a console cable or a terminal emulator like Putty or Secure CRT. If you are successful it should look something like this.

Step 2: Find The MAC Addresses

On the layer 2 device (switch) enter the username and password if needed. Next enter 'enable' mode on the switch by typing enable. Next type the command 'show mac address-table'. If successful it should look like the picture. It's worth noting that on some Cisco devices the command 'show mac-address-table' also works.

Step 3: Find the IP Address

On the layer 3 device ( L3 switch or router) in my case I am using a router, enter the username and password if needed. Next enter 'enable' mode on the router by typing enable. Next type 'show ip arp' if done correctly you should get an output similar to the picture.

Step 4: Filtering the results on a Router

In the example I have provided there were only 9 IP addresses. However in the real world there could be dozens or even hundreds of IP addresses. To help filter the results on a router type 'show ip arp ?' You will see gigabitethernet' as an option this will let you filter results by interface or sub-interfaces. In my exmaple it typed 'sho ip arp gigabitEthernet 0/0.10' and that listed all IP's on my sub-interface.

Step 5: Filtering the results on a Layer 3 Switch

As stated in Step 4, you will likely have more than 9 IP Addresses. Fundy album builder v6 crack mac. Luckily in addition to being able to filter by interface you can also filter by VLAN. So type in 'show ip arp ?' and you will see 'vlan' as a listed filter.     Great post.

    Another way to find that information is to first PING the address of the system you are looking for. Then issue:
    show arp | i .

    This will then show you the MAC address associated with the IP address.

    Then issue:
    show mac address-table | i

    This will give you the port that the device is currently connected.

    Thanks for posting this *after* I finished a 'What's Connected Where' jihad on our network. :^D After beating Google to death over it, hoping for some useful tool, I ended up using exactly the same process (plus the online MAC address lookup to ID the device manufacturer), so I can affirm this works perfectly, if you work it.

    As you can see, the 'sh arp' or 'sh ip arp' commands also give you the MAC addresses, so essentially the 'sh mac add' is only to get the port in which the device is connected. It helps to Ping the subnet's broadcast address (e.g. '10.1.1.255') to load the ARP table. (Small tip: When you see a large number of MAC addresses showing up on a single port, there's a switch on that port into which those MAC addresses are connected. If you're all Cisco, 'show cdp neighbor' (or 'sh cdp nei') will get you to the next switch. Also, 'sh ip arp | i 0/24' will show just the MAC address(es) on that port.)

    The amazing thing to me is, this far into the 21st Century, this is still the only way I could find to get this information -- i.e. to find out what's connected where. Did I mention it's a *lot* of work?

    (ETA: What if you can't get to the Console port? How do you get the IP address of the switch in order to SSH or (if you must) Telnet in?)

    Good stuff, thanks for posting this! My go-to Cisco command is: show ip interface brief (show ip int bri). Another thing I've learned that is very helpful (I'm still a noob with Cisco stuff) is tab-completion and using a '?' after the start of a command, such as 'show ?'

    Unfortunately dumping the mac table and working through it is the only way to reliably find stuff and identify its switch port. I've done a similar process with HP switches. One thing that helps a lot is an ip scanner application that does MAC vendor ID lookups for you. This can help with jim6795's problem of identifying an undocumented switch IP since you can look for the the switch maker's vendor ID and then try ssh or telnet, or http/https depending on the product.

    Spiceworks has the ability to harvest this information using SNMP and will create a map showing which device is on which switchport. It must have the correct MIB installed for your switch and you must configure SNMP. The feature could use some more work but basic components are there.

    Couldn't you just use CDP? #show cdp nei detail will show you the ip of the connected devices.

Hey everyone thanks for the great feed back, it's really cool having this featured. @SadTech0 if you cant to the console port and you don't know the IP Address you could use a tool like angry IP scanner and find the switch that way. CDP may or may not work depending on your network configuration and/or topology. Barring some major obstruction you should try to console in get the ip and start an inventory. Hope that helps.

    Keep in mind, in some security minded environments, CDP may be disable if it's not needed. It's one of those things that give out unnecessary reconnaissance info to the bad guys. If one of your edge routers gets compromised, it can be used to start footprinting your internal network.

    SHOW INVENTORY ---> To show the SERIAL number of the Cisco device you are on.

    **I always use those commands you show to troublshoot. They are very helpful. I usually PING an IP address. then I type a 'show arp' and get its MAC address. then I will type 'show mac-address table' which will show me which PORT the device is connected to!

A MAC (or Machine Access Control) address is a globally unique serial number that is given to every device connected to the internet with a network adapter. The network adapter exchanges data with every other device on a network and so it needs an address to identify itself to the other devices. These serial numbers are hardcoded by the manufacturers into the devices they sell.

The computer or smartphone you are reading this article on have their own individual MAC addresses. The wireless or wired router you are connected to has its own address too. No two MAC addresses can be the same, and usually they never change.

You won’t know a MAC address unless you see it. So, let’s learn how to find the MAC address on your computer first. Then, we will explain how a MAC shakes hands with an IP address to make networking successful.

The Common Format of a MAC Address

A MAC address is a 12-digit alpha-numeric string where each digit can be any number from 0 to 9 or letter between A and F. There are three common formats, the first being most common and preferred:

  1. MM:MM:MM:SS:SS:SS.
  2. MM-MM-MM-SS-SS-SS
  3. MMM.SSS.SSS

The first six digits (called the “organizationally unique identifier”) identify the manufacturer of the adapter, while the last six digits are the unique identification number for that specific adapter. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) assigns these prefixes to the manufacturers of the hardware devices.

You can plug a MAC address in sites like MacVendors.com and OUI Lookup Tool to find the manufacturers associated with any MAC address. Now, let’s see how to find these MAC addresses on your router, computer, and smartphone.

How to Find the MAC Address of Your Computer

You can use a few different methods to get the MAC address of your computer. Do remember that you can find multiple MAC addresses listed for one computer as they can have more than one network adapter (for instance, separate adapters for Ethernet and Wi-Fi).

Method 1: Use the Command Prompt

1) Type “cmd” in the Windows Search Box and open the Command Prompt window.

2) Enter the “ifconfig/all” command, and all the MAC addresses on your computer will be displayed as Physical Address for each adapter.

Method 2: Use the Network Connections Folder

Method 4: Use the GETMAC Command

GETMAC is another command you can use to find your MAC address. Open the Command Prompt and type getmac. Press Enter. It will immediately list all available MAC addresses under the Physical Address column.

Method 5: Use the PowerShell

In Windows 10, the Command Prompt does exist as an interface, but it has been replaced by the PowerShell for command line tasks.

It is more powerful than the Command Prompt window and you can call upon more than 300 commands to access the Windows operating system.

One of them is the getmac command which will show you the basic properties for each network adapter and their MAC addresses.

  • You can launch PowerShell in Windows 10 from Cortana’s search field. Type “powershell” and click on the first search result.
  • You can also right-click on the Start button and click Windows PowerShell in the program list.

An IP address (or an Internet Protocol Address) is another unique number that is given to each device connected to a TCP/IP network like the internet. The best way to understand it is through your own personal postal address.

The MAC address is your name, surname, gender, and age. It holds all the key identifiers that can describe you. But, if I want to send you a letter, I will need your location i.e. the address of your house with street name, town, city, state, and country.

This is the IP address. The letter will reach you only when both the addresses are uniquely described. You can change your location but if I have the new address, the letter will still reach you. It will not be delivered if you change your name.

In short: The MAC address tells me who you are while the IP address tells me where you are.

That is why you can keep working when you disconnect your laptop from your home broadband and connect it again at the office. The MAC address is hardcoded into your device while the IP address is allocated by the ISP which allows you to connect and disconnect at will. Both the addresses must work perfectly together in a TCP/IP network like the internet for one computer to communicate with another.
